เมื่อจะนำคำพูดของใครไปเล่าให้ผู้อื่นฟัง อาจมีวิธีพูดได้ 2 วิธี คือ
1. โดยยกคำพูดจริง ๆ ของผู้พูดไปเล่าให้ฟังทั้งหมดโดยไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง เรียกว่า Direct Speech เช่น
John said, "I like Mathematics."
ข้อความว่า "I like Mathematics" เป็น Direct Speech2. โดยดัดแปลงเป็นคำพูดของผู้เล่าเอง เรียกว่า Indirect Speech หรือ Reported Speech เช่น
John said (that) he liked Mathematics.
ข้อความว่า "he liked Mathematics" ดัดแปลงมาจากคำพูดของ John ที่พูดว่า "I like Mathematics"ดังนั้นข้อความนี้จึงเป็น Indirect Speech หรือ Reported Speech
