คำกริยาที่ใช้กับ Reported Speech เรียกว่า กริยานำ (Reporting Verbs หรือ Introducing Verbs) เช่น
1. say (said) = พูดว่า
2. know (knew) = รู้ว่า
3. hope (hoped) = หวังว่า4. think (thought) = คิดว่า
เช่น (1) John said, "I like Mathematics."
(2) John said (that) he liked Mathematics.
คำกริยา said ในประโยค
(1) เรียกว่า กริยานำ (Reporting Verb หรือ Introducing Verb)ข้อความว่า (that) he liked Mathematics ในประโยค
(2) เรียกว่า คำเล่า (Indirect Speech หรือ Reported Speech)
